How to check for dead pixels
- Clean your screen with a soft, dry microfibre cloth so dust isn't mistaken for a pixel.
- Press Start full-screen test.
- Click or press → to cycle through black, white, red, green, blue and other colours.
- Scan the screen slowly from corner to corner, looking for any dot that doesn't match.
Dead pixel vs stuck pixel
- Dead pixel: always black, and easiest to see on the white screen. Dead pixels usually can't be fixed.
- Stuck pixel: always lit in one colour (red, green or blue), and easiest to see on the black screen. These can sometimes be revived.
- Backlight bleed: light glowing from the edges on a black screen. It's common on LCD screens and is not a pixel fault.
How to fix a stuck pixel
Turn on the stuck pixel fixer, read the warning, and drag the flashing box over the stuck pixel. Leave it running for 10–30 minutes. Rapidly changing colours can sometimes unstick the pixel. If it doesn't work, check your warranty; many brands replace screens with a certain number of bad pixels.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a new laptop or monitor for dead pixels?
Run the full-screen test as soon as you get the device and check every colour, especially black and white. Report any dead pixels within the return period.
Can a dead pixel be fixed?
A truly dead (black) pixel usually cannot be fixed. A stuck coloured pixel can sometimes be revived with the stuck pixel fixer or gentle pressure using a soft cloth.
